Painting has always represented things but when have things ever represented painting?’
Germane Oregano on Betty Woodman
For me the surface of an object is as important as its physicality. The surface and form function together in one object, where drawing and painting are of equal relevance to the outcome of my ceramic work, as the clay body itself.
I began by exploring mark making and focussed on translating those marks onto the surface of clay; but soon realized that painting not only informed my work on the surface but the form and process of the construction of form.
There was an inter-connectivity between drawing, painting and ceramics, neither exclusive, and each playing a contributing role. So I began to draw with clay, creating a sort of 3D doodle adding to both form and surface unable to answer the question: where does one end and the other begin?
